Residential Relaxation

Denise Morrison of Denise Morrison Interiors in Newport Beach, California believes every home is a “haven” worthy of comfort and warmth. During a recent residential project—an oceanfront home in Orange County, California—Denise encountered a design dilemma:  “I found myself stuck on how to create a multifunctional guest space for the homeowner.” Luckily, a Rowe sleeper sofa came to the designer’s rescue. Denise said, “When I saw the Chelsey Sleeper Sofa, I knew it was the perfect piece for the space. I turn to Rowe for their outstanding quality and value, and the Chelsey Sleeper Sofa did not disappoint. Most importantly, the homeowner was thrilled with her new, beautiful guest room.”

Rowe Furniture: Do you have any expert tips for styling a sleeper sofa?

Denise Morrison: If you’re stuck on how to style your sleeper sofa, I highly recommend adding a kidney pillow. Because of the shallower depth, a long and lean pillow in the center of the sofa can bring the perfect amount of pattern and color, yet leave plenty of space for seating.

RF: What is one unexpected way to incorporate a sleeper sofa into your home?

DM: A big trend I’m seeing in interiors right now is the incorporation of more relaxed living spaces – my clients are often asking for less traditional rooms and more lounge areas. My own kitchen nook area has been converted into a small gathering place, and my family and I often find ourselves enjoying wine or appetizers on the more comfortable upholstery rather than the dining table. One unexpected way to incorporate a sleeper sofa into your home is in the nook! Since space in any nook is often limited, sleeper sofas are a perfect furnishing choice.

Buttermilk Inn & Spa ‘Gindele Suite’ designed by Helen Piteo Interiors

The Suite Life

When Helen Piteo, owner and lead designer of Helen Piteo Interiors in Wappington Falls, New York, began to renovate a charming local inn, she turned to Rowe Furniture. Located in picturesque Milton, NY, the grounds of Buttermilk Falls Inn & Spa are sprawling and peppered with quaint guest cottages. One cottage in particular, the Gindele Suite, received a contemporary makeover courtesy of Piteo and her design team.

With views of the ponds, streams, and wildlife, the comfortable carriage house boasts a well-equipped galley kitchen, spacious living areas, private master bedroom, and bright indoor-outdoor space. Large enough to accommodate a family of five, the Gindele Suite was designed with a selection of versatile sleeping options.

For the luminous sunroom, Helen selected the Rockford Queen Sleeper Sofa. Marrying comfort and contemporary style, the Rockford sofa bed is generous enough for two. To create a custom look, Helen selected understated and elegant details—a warm Espresso wood finish and pewter nailhead trim. For the sofa body, she chose ‘Mineral’ grey upholstery. In the living space, the Gindele Suite received two additional Rowe seating styles—a Martin Sofa and custom Martin Loveseat.

Three Unexpected Spaces for a Sleeper Sofa:

  1. Sun Porch: Capitalize on beautiful weather with a unique indoor-outdoor sleeping solution. Take your sunroom from daytime entertaining to an evening retreat with a convertible sleeper sofa. For a breezy sleeping porch, we suggest the Easton Slipcover Queen Sleeper for its transitional appeal and easy clean-up.
  2. Playroom: Impromptu sleepovers are a breeze with a well-placed sofa bed. Add a sleeper sofa to the heart of the action –the playroom — and cross your fingers for an early bedtime. Our kid-approved Somerset Twin Sleeper Sofa is perfect for small spaces and small bodies.
  3. Home Office: If your home office sometimes doubles as a guest bedroom (or a secret naptime spot), a sleeper sofa is a must-have piece. For the modern home, the Mitchell Queen Sleeper Sofa combines classic tailoring with a sleek silhouette.
